Which is the most appropriate colour for newborn or child portraiture? Which portrait is most powerful? Black and white or a vibrant colourful version?
There is often a debate in the photography world as to which portrait style packs the most punch. Some photographers prefer to specialise in black and white as the only option. We all have our own views about colour portraits vs. black and white . Only the best photographers will know exactly how and when to use both dependent upon situation and style. Sometimes it just boils down to preference!
The answer is clear with these two portrait images in comparison, colour is essential and key to telling a story and the feeling of a portrait. The black and white conversion is as equally beautiful. But the colour oozes the warmth given from taking a shot in golden hour (a photographers dream ). Creating a beautiful soft and appealing light, going monotone can give a sense of time but it just doesn’t do this one justice.
“Asking if black and white or colour photography is better is like asking if apples or oranges are better. There is no better just different and personal preference. Thankfully we live in a digital world where we can decide for ourselves after the image is taken if it was to work better with black and white or colour”.
Here at Nicola Anne Photography we do create black and white imagery, sometimes upon request but much of the time we prefer to present our work in colour as people come to us for those bright images that capture the happiness of their family.
